On July 25, 2010, ELP took the stage with all three
original members for the first time since 1998. The event was the High
Voltage Festival in England.
ELP are the Godfather’s of Prog and the set list they
gave to the fans that night was as legendary as the performers,
themselves. From the opening note, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl
Palmer were making history.
ELP are much more comfortable in exquisite theaters than
they are in the great outdoors and the festival gig was subject to many
of the bugaboos that haunt these massive festivals. Despite the
conditions and the equipment issues, ELP soldiered on and gave a grand
performance.
The concert begins with one of ELP’s most loved songs,
the heady “Karn Evil #9 Part 2.” Welcome back indeed! ELP continues with
such staples as “The Barbarian,” “Touch and Go,” “Lucky Man” “Pictures
at an Exhibition” and the granddaddy of all prog epics, “Fanfare for the
Common Man.”
The DVD brings the music, the crowd, the solos and the
fireworks into your living room with blazing color and dynamite sound.
This is truly a job well done by all involved.
Bonus features include in-depth interviews from rock
journalists, ELP fans, the band’s management team and the three
musicians. While the bonus materials are nearly as great as the show,
the music still wins out and any ELP fan worth his salt will continue to
play this concert over and over as they celebrate the band’s 40th
anniversary.
