Popa Chubby is a true survivor whose story is so
dramatic that a movie of his life should really be made.
From his father dying when he was only seven years old,
to living on the streets of New York City while nursing
a massive heroin habit, Mr. Chubby has seen it all. He
owes his livelihood, and his life, to music. Music
brought him back to the world of the living and he has
not looked back since.
With his latest release, Back to New York City,
the big man has released another gem of blues-rock,
perhaps the best he has ever created. The title track
describes how he misses his hometown, despite the
hookers and pimps in Times Square being replaced by wax
museums and other tourist destinations.
The music is 100% guitar driven blues, played and
sung by a man who has lived every word, and every note,
that he sings and plays. “Warrior God” and “Pound of
Flesh” are the rockin’ side of the Chubster, while
“Jesus Joy of Man Desire” and “Stand Before the Sun”
show him reaching outside of the blues and giving
spirited, emotional performances. “She Loves Everybody
But Me” and “Keep the Wood Pile Dry” are both great
traditional blues songs that will have toes a-tapping
from the opening beat.
From start to finish, Popa Chubby has released an
album that will excite the listener – pun 100% intended.
If you are familiar with him, then this will be yet
another treat for your ears, and if you’ve not
discovered Chubby before, then you will become an
instant fan once you slap this one in your disc player.
