9 Chambers – 9 Chambers
Sampson Records

Rating: B

Wouldn’t mixing musicians with such diverse backgrounds as Monster Magnet, Gov't Mule, Lita Ford and Alice Cooper be interesting? One wonders what kind of sound would be created… Wait a minute… that is what happened with 9 Chambers, and the sound is cool as hell!

Monster Magnet’s Ed Mundell teamed up with Greg Hampton, Jorgen Carlsson and Vinny Appice to form 9 Chambes and on September 27th they will release their debut album.

This is what can only be described as a ‘real’ rock album that puts more stock in quality than quantity. Mundell provides the classic Monster Magnet guitar sound throughout, but this is no copycat band, as Hampton brings a lot of melody to the tunes while Appice and Carlsson – hell, this is a damn good rhythm section – bring the tightness needed for the other musicians to do what they do best.

“Life Moves On” is a killer track that introduces the listener to the unique mix of old school Sabbath with Monster Magnet’s stoner rock and 9 Chambers unique take on the modern day. This is a true rock n roll stew that reflects many facets of the musical imagination.

“Bury Yourself” is a smash mouth rocker while “Darker Side of Sunshine” gives a nod to classic Alice Cooper. Other standout tracks include “Use U Up,” “Indeed the Sun” and “Cut-N-Run.”

This is a band that plays with a lot of power and finesse. While it’s tempting to dub them a super group, a more accurate description is a band that plays super.

9 Chambers is worth checking out for those that like major riffage, loudness, power and stoner rock soloing.
