Y&T — Live: One Hot Night
Locomotive Records

Rating: B+
In the hard rock pantheon, Y&T's flame burns bright. Alongside
Montrose, UFO and a clutch of others, Oakland's Y&T commands
respect yet eludes mainstream acceptance.
Perhaps that underdog quality has only strengthened fan loyalty,
because more than 30 years after bursting onto the scene, the
guys show no signs of slowing. Proving that point is Live: One
Night Night, a DVD that truly lives up to its name. Watching
bassist Phil Kennemore wring out his sweat-soaked stage garb
tells it all. Another backstage gem sees mainman Dave Meniketti
laughing after slipping on his own stage sweat. Backstage
shenanigans notwithstanding, this disc celebrates the music
that's made Y&T rock legends. And the few lucky fans packing
Cultuurpodium Boerderij in The Netherlands make this performance
a rousing ruckus.
Kicking things off with "From The Moon-Open Fire," it's as if
Black Tiger just sprang from its cage. The guys sound fresher
and younger than many new bands these days. Sadly, Joey Alves
and Leonard Haze no longer claim their respective roles on
rhythm guitar and drums. Those duties fall to John Nymann and
Mike Vanderhule, who more than capably fill some big shoes.
Through 20 stellar songs, this disc satisfies. From "Dirty Girl"
and "Mean Streak" to "Summertime Girls" and other commercial
fare, the DVD covers the gamut. And a bonus disc delivers
after-show rituals that make fans feel part of the team.
Watching the boys huddle like victorious NFL champs makes
outsiders a part of the family. Then there's the guys laughing
about a performance that scorched in more ways than one: heavy
rock and heavier clothing thanks to buckets of sweat that flowed
freely.
Dollar for dollar, Live: One Hot Night delivers. We get three
hours of music and mirth, plus a bonus concert CD thrown in for
good measure. So slip this disc into that disc player and relive
a rockin' night.
