Queensryche - Take Cover

Rating B

Queensryche has jumped on the bandwagon and released a CD of cover tunes. As one would expect they do a great job. Queensryche has written original songs that sound like Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd so it is not a huge stretch to think they could pull this off.

Opening the album is "Welcome to the Machine" by Pink Floyd. This is the best track on the disc. The band does a great job of melding their own style and mixing it with the original. Black Sabbath's "Neon Knights" is another gem and perhaps contains the best performance by all on the entire CD. Other notable tracks include "Almost Cut My Hair" by CSNY, U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky" and Peter Gabriel's "Red Rain." There are a few misses as well, the worst being "For What It's Worth" by Buffalo Springfield.

All in all, this is a fun collection of songs with many tracks that will surprise Queensryche's fans (who would ever guess Geoff Tate would sing a song by the Police?). Still, it is a bit novelty and with the exception of Floyd's "Welcome to the Machine" and Sabbath's "Neon Knights" it contains no material that will beg you to play it again.
