Rating: B
The 'fun' Beatle returns with his first release on Capitol
Records since 1974 with Liverpool 8.
Starr collaborates with longtime friend Dave Stewart on the
album and the result is one of the best solo albums Ringo has
ever released. There are no real surprises as the album sounds
like Ringo. The rhythms are snappy, the songs upbeat and the
voice still resonates with the same unique charm all have come
to love. Each of the twelve tracks were co-written by Ringo
ensuring his special songwriting flavor is embedded in every
track.
The opening title track is
an autobiographical song that will take Beatles fans all the way
back to Ringo's hometown. "Think About You" follows and is
perhaps the strongest overall song on the release. "Now that
She's Gone Away" is reminiscent of something that Ringo could
have released in the early 70's. The song sees a lovesick Ringo
trying to figure out what he did wrong in his failed
relationship. "Gone are the Days" is another standout track that
plays off Ringo's past as well.
Hats off to both Ringo and
Dave Stewart for putting in the hard work to make a good album a
great ablum. At this stage of the game both men could sit back
and rest on their laurels. It is refreshing to see passion and
perfection still making their way into their creative process.
