Rating: B

School of The Arts is the brainchild of Dixie Dregs / Jazz Is Dead keyboardist T.Lavitz and features the contributions of some of the most talented musicians in the jazz field. This all acoustic affair delivers an incredibly high level of dynamics and musical interplay, but considering the musicians involved, it also doesn’t resort to an overabundance of soloing, instead placing the focus primarily on the compositions themselves. Lavitz certainly knew what he was doing, employing a stellar rhythm section of drummer Dave Weckl and bassist John Patitucci, augmenting them with a collection of ‘guest’ players which includes violin maestro Jerry Goodman (Mahavishnu Orchestra) and guitarists Frank Gambale (Vital Information, Chick Correa) and fellow Dreg band mate (and current Deep Purple shredder) Steve Morse. The musical chemistry between these musicians is apparent on every single track and School Of The Arts is very impressive and promising debut for Lavitz as a bandleader. Here’s hoping it’s the first of many more to come.
