Rating: B+
The classic Maiden live album comes to
life every time lead singer Bruce Dickinson bellows "Scream
for me Long Beach" to the capacity crowd. The live album was
recorded on the bands Powerslave tour and featured
the album arts Egyptian theme as a stage set. The band
performs a classic set that includes "Number of the Beast,"
"Two Minutes to Midnight," "The Trooper," "Hallowed Be Thy
Name" and "Rime of the Ancient Mariner." What brings this
DVD over the top, however, is the addition of a second bonus
disc.
As good as the songs
are, and as fun as it is to listen to Dickinson talk about
the Queen of England smoking pot to relieve her period
cramps, the bonus disc is what will have Maiden faithful
foaming at the mouth. Picking up where the original
documentary left off on the last Maiden release, Part II
sees in-depth interviews with the band on the Powerslave
and Live After Death era of the band. Also
included are rare performances from the Rock in Rio festival
from 1985 where over 300,000 fans rocked out with the band.
A documentary from back in the day titled Behind the Iron
Curtain, originally shown on MTV, is included with
several minutes never before seen. This is a behind the
scenes’ look at what it was like to be a part of the monster
Maiden machine in the ‘80's.
At the end of the day,
this will be snapped up by all rivet heads and rock dog fans
of the band, however, it should be checked out by anyone who
wants to both relieve the glory days of heavy metal and
learn more about the band from the superb bonus features.
This one is a winner.
