Rating: A-
Beth Hart is a smooth singing, smoky voiced blues
singer who has teamed up with guitar wizard Joe
Bonamassa for an album of soul chillin’ blues. This is a
great album that sees the duo creating amazing music
from the opening notes of “Sinner’s Prayer” to the final
moment of “Ain’t no Way.”
While Bonamassa is one of the greatest guitarists on
the planet, his solo music is amazing and his band,
Black Country Communion is scary good, he takes a
backseat on this album concerning his trademark
blistering solos. More content to set the stage for
Hart, Joe rhythmically adds to the songs with his
ability to deliver just what the song needs. That does
not mean Joe does not play some amazing guitar, as he
does, it is just more sublime and less in-yer-face.
Beth Hart is so damn sexy sounding that I needed a few
moments alone after listening to this disc for the first
time. Why this lady is not a household name is beyond
explanation. Songs like “Chocolate Jesus,” “Your Heart
is as Black as Night,” “For My Friends,” “I’d Rather Go
Blind” and “Well Well” see this lady singing from the
depths of her blues soaked soul. Where Bonamassa makes
the songs alive, Hart gives them essence and
personality. She delivers a truly amazing performance.
Bonamassa will hopefully keep this girl around and not
make this a one off. Not sure where he will find time
with all of the other things he is involved in, but Hart
and Bonamassa need to take this to smoky blues clubs
around the world.
All that’s left to say is “WOW!”
