American Dog is the worlds best bar band. Led by dog
groomer (no lie) Michael Hannon, who spent some time on
the Sunset Strip with damn near made it band
Salty Dog, American Dog truly lead a dog’s life. Hannon
provides the energy as well as the bass and vocals. He
co-writes the music, drinks beer, promotes the band
endlessly, drinks more beer, travels the world playing
his three chord (okay sometimes four) style of hard rock
and then drinks more beer.
The DVD is well shot and sounds great. The main
attraction is the band’s gig at L'Empreinte, Savigny Le
Temple, France. The concert features such dog biscuits
as “Shitkicker,” “Human Garbage Can,” “Sometimes You Eat
the Pussy,” “Drank Too Much” and “Boozehound.” In case
you can’t tell this is a hard-core party band. American
Dog are pure American balls to the grindstone (ouch)
loud rock n’ fuckin’ roll.
The music may not be written by virtuosos, the lyrics
may remind you of junior high school and the vocals
sound a bit like a hoarse Kevin Dubrow of Quiet Riot but
damn this is fun music. Think Nashville Pussy, meets
early Alice Cooper, meets early Molly Hatchet meets
Motorhead, put it all into a blender and add piss, mud,
grease, two skanky strippers and, of course, liquor and
you have the cocktail titled American Dog.
The bonus features include tons of videos by the band
that will have you laughing and rocking your ass off.
Michael Hannon and guitarist Steve Theado emcee the
bonus features while sitting at a bar and take you
behind the scenes, into the studio and backstage. There
is also two famous guest appearances on the DVD, one by
Sir Loin of Beef and the other by the Twilight Zone-ish
Dog Serling.
American Dog reminds one why rock n’ roll is fun as
well as why being bad feels oh so good. This one is a
winner.
