Rating: A
Originally released in 1994, Capitol Records has
re-released the album. There are no additional tunes, no
new liner notes and no bonus discs of any kind. Still,
this is one hell of an album. Bob Seger is fresh off his
first American tour in years and recently announced that
he is going to be doing another one. Probably a smart
move to make sure this album is on the shelves.
Greatest Hits is far from being a complete
collection of the best Bob has to offer but it does a
good job at representing his most popular eras. The
overplayed “Like A Rock” is on the album and will likely
be skipped over as listeners choose songs that have not
been beat to death. “Roll Me Away” is a great song that
never got the total respected it deserved. It starts off
the album and reminds us that Bob Seger is much, much
more than “Old Time Rock n’ Roll.”
Songs like “Mainstreet,” “Against the Wind,” “Turn
the Page,” “You’ll Accomp’ny Me,” “Hollywood Nights,”
“Night Moves,” “Still the Same,” “We’ve Got Tonight” and
“The Fire Inside” show Seger’s musical soul.
We are still waiting for Bob to put out that huge box
set of all his hits but in the meantime we have this, a
good showing of his wares. These are timeless American
classics proving that Seger should be revered the same
way other American rock artists such as Bob Dylan and
Bruce Springsteen are.
