The Piano Man, himself, was called in to perform the
final concert at iconic Shea Stadium in New York City.
The Beatles put Shea on the map when they first came to
America, leading the way for nearly every huge rock band
to follow. It may have been the home to the New York
Mets but Shea was just as famous for rock n roll as it
was the miracle season of 1969. Joel, a native New York
City boy done good was the perfect choice to close down
Shea and end an era in both baseball and music.
The double disc also comes with a DVD that features
performances by Joel and Steven Tyler, Roger Daltrey and
John Mellencamp. While these performances, “Walk This
Way,” “My Generation” and “Pink Houses” are cool; they
are just the icing on the cake. The heart and soul of
the album is Billy and his classic tunes and album cuts.
Joel may have to tune down here and there but that is
understandable. Considering a lifetime of drinking and
smoking it is amazing he has any voice left at all. The
recording of the album is amazing. The sonic sound
delivery makes one feel there are in Shea. It is hands
down one of the best sounding live albums in years.
Joel scores big as he puts in plenty of hardcore fan
favorites, intermingled with the ‘must play’ songs.
“Goodnight Saigon,” “This is the Time,” “Keeping the
Faith,” “The River of Dreams,” “You May Be Right,” “We
Didn’t Start the Fire” and “Only the Good Die Young”
showed off Billy’s knack for writing huge hit songs. He
biggest fans, however, rejoiced at the inclusion of
“Summer, Highland Falls,” “Zanzibar,” “The Ballad of
Billy the Kid,” “Miami 2017,” “Captain Jack” and “Scenes
From an Italian Restaurant.”
As if this were not enough reason to buy this CD,
there are many special guests and classic songs
performed by Joel. Tony Bennett shines on “New York
State of Mind” while Garth Brooks takes on “Shameless.”
The honorary guest of the night, however, was none other
than Sir Paul McCartney. “I Saw Her Standing There” and
“Let It Be” are two of the high points of the concert.
The only thing that would make this one better is if you
were there.
