Blackberry Smoke are one of the best live bands on
the planet this day and age. There are no bells and
whistles, fancy laser lights, deejay booths, girls in
cages or giant backing screens. Instead, there is a band
who love to jam out guitar solos, put on a show and give
110% of what they have every night on stage.
The band is a mix of Hank, Willie and Merle, the
Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynrd and Wet Willie
with a touch of Aerosmith for good measure. Oh, did I
mention the balls out guitar jams?
Like Donny and Marie, Blackberry Smoke is a little
bit country and a little bit rock n’ roll, unlike the
Mormon siblings, however, Blackberry Smoke is not afraid
to talk about fingerfucking a girl while skinny dippy,
partying down or having a good time. These boys live on
the bus and live to play music. This DVD is testament
that the spirit of Southern Rock is alive and well and
people are starting to take notice.
The band is great because they play awesome songs.
From “Like I Am” to “Good One Coming On” to “Sleeping
Dogs" this band deliver the goods. They pay plenty of
homage to those who came before them on the DVD as
“Sleeping Dogs” features snippets of “Midnight Rider”
and “I Know You Rider.” The band play “Yesterday’s Wine”
by Willie Nelson and even trot out some classic Merle
Haggard before the night is over.
Blackberry Smoke are a true rock band, with country
flavoring. They can go from a flat out ballsy rocker to
a country ballad in a heartbeat and the crowd takes it
all in, grateful that there is still someone out there
who gives more of a shit about music than they do about
fortune and fame.
Bottom line: Buy this DVD and play it for everyone
you know.
