Circa is the band created by Billy Sherwood, most
famous for his time spent in the prog rock band Yes. He
is joined by former Yes band mate Tony Kaye, guitarist
Johnny Bruhns and drummer Ronnie Ciago. And So On
continues Sherwood’s commitment to making amazing
progressive tunes that are recognizably different from
the other famous bands in the genre. This is not a Yes
copy. It is not ELP. It is not Gentle Giant. It is not
UK and it is not King Crimson. It is Circa.
Sherwood delivers music that is very serene yet
engaging; surreal yet inviting and mellow yet has
elements of rock that keep it moving along at a nice
pace. It is a very unique way of crafting songs. The
band, especially Bruhns, deliver big. It is his lead
guitar parts that often take a sublime song and bring it
to life.
Vocally, Sherwood is a unique vocalist. In fact, he
gives the whole thing a touch of early Genesis.
Actually, that makes the point I was making in the
earlier paragraph easier to explain. Circa is it’s own
entity but one can hear touches of Yes, Genesis, King
Crimson and Yes in the music. Circa is the natural
progression of where great prog rock should be in its
evolutionary chain.
This is a cool album and, as clichéd as this sounds,
it really must be heard to be appreciated.
