Head Cat is a three-piece rockabilly band with a
twist. Slim Jim Phantom from the Stray Cats is on drums
– nothing to odd there. On guitar is veteran Rockabilly
guitarist Danny B. Harvey – that fits. On bass and
vocals is Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead. What? Yep,
THAT Lemmy. The two most famous moles in rock n’ roll
along with one of the most famous growls and iconic
looks off all time is the front man for a band that
plays classic tunes from yesteryear, including
“Crossroads,” “You Can’t Do That,” “Say Mama,” “Bad
Boy,” “Shakin’ All Over,” “Let It Rock,” “Something
Else” and “It’ll Be Me.” The band throw in a few
originals as well including the lead off single
“American Beat” and “The Eagle Flies on Friday.”
At first glance it may seen crazy to pair up Slim Jim
and Lemmy but upon further examination one finds out
this is not so odd, after all. Lemmy has long said that
Motorhead is not a heavy metal band. He also says that
he has more in common with the punks than the metal
heads. In fact, Lem is a true lover of late 1950’s and
early 1960’s music. He actually pulls this off well.
While he does not sound near as pretty, vocally, as
Lennon and McCartney on the Beatles “You Can’t Do That”
he still sounds ultra cool. I imagine Lemmy could sing
the phone book and make it interesting.
There are no politics to this band, no drug
references, no cussing and no banging one’s head.
Instead, this is a celebration of the roots of rock
executed by three men whose passion for this style of
music runs deep inside of their hearts. They pump it
through their veins and out their amps resulting in a
new twist and take on the old twist and shout. This one
is fun from start to finish.
