The album Raw Power, virtually ignored when
released in 1973, found a second chance at life when it
became the prototype punk rock album. An entire genre of
music can be traced back to the half naked, half-baked
and fully outrageous Iggy Pop and the Stooges classic
release.
In September of 2010, the Stooges performed the album
in its entirety at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival.
Five fans selected by Pop, himself, filmed the show.
The Stooges lineup consisted of Pop, Scott Asheton,
James Williamson, Steve Mackay and Mike Watt. The main
differences between this and the Stooges performing
Raw Power back in the day are the band’s ability to
play better and the audience cheering instead of pelting
them with debris!
“Search and Destroy,” “Your Pretty Face is Going to
Hell,” “Penetration” and “Death Trip” are the best of
the bunch. It is easy to see, with hindsight, why this
album became part of the punk scenes audio bible. The
songs are brutal, loud, full of attitude and delivered
by Iggy Pop, who was punk before punk was punk. The
concert continues on and includes, among other songs,
the Stooge’s classics “Fun House,” “I Wanna Be Your Dog”
and “1970.”
The concert was filmed by five of the most fanatic
Stooge fans in the world. A contest was held to select
the chosen few. It is interesting how different they
are, both in look and personality. While there is no
doubt they are Stooge Nerds, they range from homely, to
freaky, to burned out to social reject… pretty much like
the band.
The bonus footage features an in-depth interview
between the Stooge Nerds and the Stooges, with Iggy
getting most of the attention. The idea worked as the
five fanatics took their job seriously and delivered
both a good looking production and interesting interview
segments.
