Jeff Healey never got the respect he deserved. A
blind guitar player with an unorthodox way of playing,
Healey was a master of his instrument. More people know
him from being in the movie Roadhouse than they
do for his music, which is a shame. Healey played with
passion dripping from his fingertips. His passion can be
heard on every note of the recently released live album
Live at Grossman’s 1994. We lost Jeff long before
his time and all we have left is his music.
Grossman’s was a venue Jeff and his band performed at
while they were working their way up. Considered the
best Blues venue in Canada, Grossman’s was honored when
Healey showed up for a two-night stint back in 1994.
This was a jam done for fun and you can hear the fun in
the crowd, the band and the tunes throughout the album.
The nine-song set is killer and features tunes from
such artists as Ten Years After, The Beatles, Eric
Clapton, Elmore James and Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix.
Beginning with “I’m Going Home” written by Alvin Lee,
the band is smoking from the get go. “Killing Floor”
drops jaws agape as the musicianship on this sucker is
simply amazing. “Yer Blues” from the Beatles is cool as
it is reworked Jeff Healey style. “Dust My Broom” and
“All Along the Watchtower” are two of the highlights yet
it is the predictable Robert Johnson classic,
“Crossroads” that is the crowing jewel.
Pick this one up to pay homage to a great man and
guitar player who is currently jamming these tunes out
in blues heaven with the men who wrote them.
