John Wetton – Raised in Captivity
Frontiers Records

Rating: B

Asia’s John Wetton has taken time out of the bands busy touring schedule and released an album featuring some amazing prog rock guests. As usually, Wetton’s voice is one of a kind and he sounds great from start to finish. The album contains several layers and musical themes, a classic Wetton multi-musical dimensional album.

The best tracks are “Lost for Words” featuring Deep Purple’s Steve Morse on guitar, “The Devil and the Opera House” featuring prog legend Eddie Jobson, “New Star Rising,” with guitar courtesy of Uriah Heep’s Mick Box and “The Human Condition” with Tony Kaye.

Other notable guest include Robert Fripp, Steve Hackett and Geoff Downes. Many times when an album features so many notable guests the album loses continuity but Wetton makes sure this does not happen. In fact, if one did not know the talented musicians were on the album then they would not miss a thing, as this is a total album where the songs go together well.

This is not the best thing Wetton has done but it is certainly not the worst. It falls somewhere in the middle. There are moments of brilliance and a few yawns but, overall, this is a strong effort from an experienced recording artist and his talented friends.
