Neal Morse, back in 2003, undertook one of the most
monumental tasks of his career when he created the album
Testimony, chronicling his call to Faith. Now, in
2011, Morse is releasing a project even more grand
titled Testimony 2. This time around Morse puts
in music his autobiography. He has also released a book
that chronicles the story as well, which is sold
separately.
The first disc of the journey represents Neal’s life
with Prog Masters, Spock’s Beard. Neal’s fans will be
foaming at the mouth as he revisits the style of
songwriting from his most popular era of his career.
However, it is the second disc, and the nearly 26-minute
epic titled “Seeds of Gold” that hits this one out of
the park. This is, perhaps, the best music ever written
by the talented musician. Guitarist Steve Morse adds an
amazing solo to the song that takes it completely over
the top. This song is everything good about Prog Rock.
It teeters on self indulgent but just when one expects
the Prog to take it to where only the truest Prog nerds
on the planet will understand, Morse reels it back into
the normal rock arena.
Drumming on the album is Mike Portnoy while the bass
is handled by Randy George. Other notable guests include
Nick D'Virgilio, Alan Morse, Dave Meros, Paul
Bielatowicz, Matthew Ward and members of the Nashville
Symphony.
If the book is half as interesting as the musical
version of Morse’s life then it should be a hit. The
making of this album was a tall order, and there is a
special version of the release that chronicles the
making of the album on a bonus DVD that is sure to be a
must-own for his fans.
