The Pineapple Thief – 3000 Days

Rating: B+
When guitarist / vocalist Bruce Soord entered his home
studio to commence work on a new project back in 1999 he
in effect created the blue print for The Pineapple
Thief, a band which has gone on to release seven albums
to date.
Flash forward to roughly 3000 days later and Soord has
delivered an impressive looking and sounding two disc
‘best of’ compilation spanning the past ten years. TPT
fans get twenty tracks in total, including a few
alternate versions and mixes, which have all been
re-mastered for optimum sound quality.
The group’s sound can best be described as a cross
between early Radiohead (both musically and vocally as
Soord’s voice bears an uncanny resemblance to Tom
Yorke’s), and the mellotron playing progressive bands of
the 70’s. Soord certainly has a penchant for writing
songs about love and loss and wrapping them in
absolutely gorgeous bittersweet sounding melodies that
will stick in your head for days. Trying to pick out
individual highlights or picking one song over another
is an almost impossible task because each and every song
on this collection is a contender. The packaging is
another standout reason to buy 3000 Days as the
inside booklet not only contains some cool photos and
graphics, they also include Soord’s notes and comments
about every song.
If you’re new to the music of The Pineapple Thief then
3000 Days is the perfect place to start. I have a
feeling though that even the diehard fans who have
everything the band has released are going to want to
scoop this one up as well.
