In 2010, Saga was without their frontman, Michael
Sadler. In his place was Rob Moratti. The fan base
accepted this change --- begrudgingly. When Moratti
proved to be capable, even the most devoted Saga Sadler
fans came around. Some embraced the new vocalist while
others saw his involvement as a necessary evil to keep
the band playing live.
It was a tough era but the band, very underrated
musically, chose to prove themselves with the new
lineup. They decided to perform live, from start to
finish, their classic album Heads or Tails. This
was a risky proposition but one Saga pulled off with
ease. The album flows live; even the mellower parts of
the album have a new energy. Moratti gives it 110% and
is one of the reasons this one came off so well.
The man who gets the award for making this a killer
live offering, however, is the band’s lead guitar
player, Ian Crichton. One never sees this guy even
mentioned when discussing great guitar players. Hell, he
doesn’t even make “Most Overrated” lists. Bottom line:
He should. Ian delivers big throughout the album and
makes one remember what a great band Saga was, and still
is.
Sadler has since returned to the fold so, the Saga
continues. Heads or Tails Live is a nice little
diamond in the rough from a time easily overlooked by
Saga fans. Check this one out and you will be pleasantly
surprised.
