Rock Candy Records are true rock archeologists who
continue to uncover music that time forgot. Sometimes
they discover a gem and other times they end up with
Fool’s Gold. Stan Bush is somewhere in-between.
Sure, the guy had it all…looks, a great voice, great
style, great studio musicians behind him trying to make
him a rock star. That is part of the issue with Stan
Bush. He was being made into the next Rick Springfield;
only trouble was there was already a Rick Springfield.
These albums have some issues. The songs are well
crafted, executed perfectly and Stan hits all the notes
with nary a hair out of place. As oddly as it seems, the
self-titled debut is just too damn perfect. Rock n’ Roll
needs warts, mistakes, a sense of danger and an
attitude. This album is too perfect. What is lacking is
emotion, originality and danger. Back in the day, this
would have been best described as music for 12-year-old
girls.. come to think of it that does sound a lot like
Rick Springfield…
Stan Bush & Barrage was the attempt to correct the
mistakes of making the first one too good. They tried to
put Stan in a band and make him grittier. Once again,
this had everything but the obvious. The attitude and
edge that was created was not real. It was going for the
image of what they wanted Stan to be. At the end of the
day, these albums are okay. There is nothing wrong with
them, and if you love happy, perfectly executed,
corporate rock, with tons of sugar but little soul, then
these albums are for you. It’s a shame, really, as Bush
seems very talented. Once wonders if left to his own
devices if things would have turned out differently.
