George Thorogood and the Destroyers – 2120 South Michigan Ave.

Rating: B+

The Dr. of Rock n’ Roll Archeology, George Thorogood is back with 13 tunes that celebrate the famous address of Chess Records. These songs are all gems and truly represent one of the most sacred birthplaces of rock n’ roll, as we know it today.

“Spoonful,” “Seventh Son,” “Bo Diddley,” “My Babe,” “2120 South Michigan Ave.” and “Chicago Bound” all feature that famous Thorogood growl and slide guitar. George really goes all out on this one, putting his energy into the tunes and making sure the Blues legends would be proud of the short white boy from the Eastern part of the USA.

The real treat on the album is the tune “Hi-Heel Sneakers” featuring the one and only Buddy Guy on lead guitar. Buddy may be getting up in age but he can still play a mean solo. One can picture Lonesome George smiling ear-to-ear when recording this gem. Harp player, Charlie Musselwhite also blows the harmonica on both “2120” and “My Babe.”

This is the best album George and the Destroyers have released in sometime. No gimmicks, no shtick (okay a little shtick) and 100% rock n’ roll.
