Witch was one of the craziest bands to ever hit the
Sunset Strip and while fame and fortune eluded them, a
lasting legacy of mayhem and madness has forever been
etched into Heavy Metal history. The band were as famous
for fighting on stage, including breaking up on stage,
dating porn stars, hanging out with Lita Ford and Motley
Crue, slashing Metallica’s tires and tattooing their
muscles of love as they were for their music.
Their legacy, too bizarre, sick and twisted to not be
true, would make find fodder for a movie, but for now
all we have is their recordings, which have been
released by FNA Records. The music is powerful and
heavy, much more like a New Wave of British Heavy Metal
band than a hair sprayed and makeup wearing typical Hair
Band.
Several famous rockers saw something in Witch as
well, as Slash, Keith Emerson, Steve Stevens and Chris
Holmes all appear as guests on the album. The best of
the bunch are the songs “Victory Without Pain,” “Wet &
Wild,” “Damnation” and “Nervous Wreck.” While the sound
quality is more demo than it is polished, after a few
listens this actually enhances Witch and makes the album
come across as the real deal. This is who the band was
and they unapologetically rock their balls off from
beginning to end.
Check out the album now and wait for the movie. If
Motley Crue is The Dirt, then Witch is the
Grease, the Grime & the Sludge.
