Oh my. Devin Townsend singing “New York New York” is almost
as weird as Dee Snider belting out “It Was A Very Good Year” or
a mega-metal version of “Love and Marriage.”
Other guests include Glenn Hughes singing “I’ve Got You Under
My Skin,” Geoff Tate on “Summerwind,” Tim “Ripper” Owens
shredding up “Witchcraft,” Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander taking on
“Fly Me to the Moon” and Mr. Big’s Eric Martin belting out “The
Lady is a Tramp.”
One must ask oneself just why this album was ever made, let
alone released. I suppose it is hard rock’s tribute to the
greatest crooner to ever take the stage… but was it necessary?
The answer is “no” but that doesn’t really matter when it comes
to rock n’ roll. This is pure cheese and total novelty but the
look on your friends face the first time these tunes come on is
priceless. Doubtful it will be beloved by Frank’s biggest fans
but one never knows. By the way, Zander wins best performance as
he made the damn tune a Cheap Trick song and this writer, for
one, hopes it finds its way into CT’s set list. It would be a
damn fine encore.
