Rory Gallagher -- Crest of a Wave
Eagle Records
www.eaglerockent.com
Rating: A
The
world lost a great talent when Rory Gallagher died from
complications of alcoholism. While never a big name in
the US of A, Gallagher was a much-respected guitarist by
all axe players across the globe. His rich mix of
electric and acoustic blues coupled with traditional
Irish folk made him an interesting songwriter and
artist. His guitar phrasing and soloing abilities made
him a hero to millions.
Eagle Records has released a two-disc retrospective
titled Crest of a Wave that is comprised of 24
studio classics from Rory. The highlights of the discs
are “Calling Card,” “Tattoo’d Lady,” “Million Miles
Away,” “Bad Penny,” “Moonchild,” “Wheels Within Wheels”
and “Out On The Western Plain.” Gallagher could vocally
deliver a story while musically providing the stories
soundscape. His unique vocal delivery was not pretty,
and may have hurt his chances to garner an American
radio audience, but in retrospect, it was as important
as his guitar prowess to his overall sound and image.
Rory is a once in a lifetime artist who needs to be
remembered. Eagle Records has neatly put together a
package for both his biggest fans and those who are
wishing to be initiated for the first time.
