Dave Mustaine does not need any gimmicks, guests or
even Lou Reed to make a great album.
TH1RT3EN is one of the best albums Megadeth
has ever released – and that is saying a lot. The album
sold three times what Dave’s former band, Metallica, did
with their new album upon release, which I bet brought a
smile to the madman, born again Christian’s face.
“Sudden Death” shows off both Shawn Drover on drums
and Chris Broderick on guitar. “Public Enemy NO 1”
continues the onslaught of Heavy Metal. The album does
not really ever hit a point where it runs out of steam,
or becomes redundant. The Metal found here is primarily
Old School as it is actually Thrash Light in several
places, so some of the ultra headbangers may not like to
hear that, but us older Metal loving dudes will
appreciate it.
”Whose Life is It Anyway” is a particularly familiar
theme for Megadeth fans but Dave still snarls and growls
and brings it all with a very melodic riff. “We are the
People” is another classic theme that Ted Nugent would
give a thumbs up too. “Guns, Drugs & Money” is a classic
Megadeth tune that brings one back to the good old days.
“New World Order” and “Wrecker” really give the world
a glimpse into the talent that is Chris Broderick. While
some former ‘Deth alums may have more overall talent,
Broderick may have them all beat when it comes down to
the perfect mix of melody and speed in his playing.
The album’s closer, “13” is the best song on the
album, beginning with a clear channel guitar in a minor
key before the distorted shredding comes in and builds
things to a climax when Dave comes in and the music
becomes solemn and eerie. The album builds to a
crescendo and leaves the listener emotionally spent.
If you like it raw, loud, powerful, honest and
intense then TH1RT3EN will quickly become one of
your favorite releases of 2011.
