Rockpile featured two of the father’s of New Wave, Dave
Edmunds and Nick Lowe collaborating, often as solo artists due
to contractual issues of the day. While the band only released
one official album, Rockpile tunes can be found all over
Edmunds’ and Lowe's late 1970’s catalog.
Eagle Records found a real diamond in the rough when they
discovered the band played a very rare gig at Montreux back in
1980. The only song from the official Rockpile album performed
was the hit “Teacher Teacher” which is a shame as the entire
album is a classic. However, that said, there are tons of great
tunes including the band’s version of what would become a Juice
Newton hit, “Queen of Hearts” and the standards “Let It Rock”
and “Crawling From the Wreckage.” Most of the other songs can be
found on the solo albums of the duo as mentioned before. The
band does an excellent version of Edmonds’ first hit, “I Hear
You Knocking” and the crowd eats up the now forgotten tracks
“Switchboard Susan” and “Trouble Boys.”
This is a cool find from the Montreux Jazz Festival vaults
yet it would have been so much better if the band had played
more of the classic album but the fact that these guys were
captured live at all makes this one a must-own for fans of Lowe
and Edmonds.
