Jason Yates – Self Titled
Vapor Records
www.vaporrecords.com
Rating: B
Jason Yates is known in keyboard circles as a master of the
Hammond B3 organ. He has played with some huge names,
including Taj Majal, Macy Gray and the Blind Boys of
Alabama, but has never really broken out of their
shadows to show his own musical persona. Oddly enough,
his own musical footprint is not as steeped in the B3 as
one might expect. His music is mellow, bar room piano
music mixed with a band that helps take the listener’s
emotions on a hell of a ride.
Jason’s talents caught the ear of Marc Ford of the Black
Crowes fame. Marc pitches in on the tune “Paper Tents”
and is a huge supporter of the new breaking talent. “I
Run” is a sad tune that grabs onto the listener and
brings him into Yates’ world. “Sing For You” and “Tear
Drops” are other outstanding tunes. While this
collection of songs does not rock, we all need some slow
jams now and then to help us reflect on life.
This is an interesting CD from a very talented man. Get
this one now and then wait for even greater things from
this artist in the future.
