This album
was a smash back in 1967…42 years ago. It is hard to believe
that much time is now under the belt of rock n’ roll. The
original album featured the huge smash “I Can See For Miles” but
failed to produce any other classic tunes. “Armenia City in the
Sky” and “Mary Anne with the Shaky Hand” are both great tunes
but unless one is die-hard Who fanatic, most of the tunes on
The Who Sell Out are not well known.
The deluxe
edition is certainly impressive with amazing liner notes, never
seen photos and advertisements for the album from back in the
day. The music was remastered from the original stereo and mono
masters and the collection features a slew of bonus tracks.
This is an
important album in rock’s past as it shows both the Who and rock
music changing from nice boys who wear ties on stage to wild
boys who pour baked beans all over themselves or go after hot
chicks while wearing caveman fur and holding a teddy bear (see
the cover). This is THE original four, Roger, Pete, John and
Keith Moon, doing what they did best. While it is far from the
best album the band made, in 1967 this was cutting edge and
allowed the band to push the boundaries and make the classic
music that followed.
