Swampdawamp – Rock This Country

Rating: B

Swampdawamp has been hanging around the past several years making a name for themselves, building momentum and honing their songwriting skills.  The hard work has paid off as their latest release, Rock This Country, is a very cohesive album of southern fried rock that will leave the listener hitting play again and turning the volume up a little bit louder.

The band is built around the songwriting talents of Gig Michaels, a burly vocalist who is equal parts Danny Joe Brown and Travis Tritt.  A true southern rocker, Gig is doing his best to keep the genre of music he loves alive and well.

The band may be better off marketing their music to country stations these days as Southern Rock seem to be the odd man out, even on classic rock radio.  It is a shame that this kind of music has a hard time getting on the airwaves as Southern Rock is 100% American music and, live, there is still a large audience.

Swamp proves the have matured, musically, with several tracks that are good old-fashioned whompers!  “American Man” is an anthem that would make Ted Nugent proud while “Daddy Said” is a heartfelt tune that would make Lynyrd Skynyrd sit up and pay attention.   Every song is well crafted and polished.  The albums closer, “Stoned,” is bound to be a live favorite as is the title track and “Shame.”

Gig and Company may have just done it on this one.  They are proving they are worthy of success and they are working hard to bring it their way.  The only thing missing is the fact that all of the songs are between two and three minutes long. Next time they need to hit us up with a few seven-minute rockers with huge guitar solos, then we will now fer-sure that Southern Rock is still kicking.
