Various Artists – Tune In To Mind Radio: A Tribute to Kelly Keeling

Rating: B

At first glance a tribute album to a vocalist that is, well, much less than a household name, seemed a bit odd.  Sure, Keeling has been around the block, but never a major name on his own.  He has played with many great artists including Blue Murder, John Norum, Michael Schenker, Carmine Appice, Yngwie Malmsteen, Heaven and Earth and Vivian Campbell.  Still, was there really enough there to base an entire album around?  Upon hearing the six track CD, the answer is a big YES!

Five of the six songs are written by Keeling but performed by other artists.  A sixth track, “Hombre Salvaje” was writing as a tribute to Kelly by friend Dominic Gaudious.

Every note, of ever song, is great.  The musicians were given total freedom and they delivered big time.  The songs range from pop rock to hard rock to new age and world music.  There are jazzy elements, powerful hard edged moments and softness that bring emotion.

Some of the notable names contributing include Carmine Appice, Tony Franklin and Marty Paris.  The guests are nice to have but the music here is what matters.  This one may be tempting to write off, as Kelly is not a huge solo name, but don’t make that mistake for this is a great CD.

Head over to his website www.kellykeeling.net to order the disc.   This is a project of passion resulting in a wonderful collection of tunes.
