The Georgia Satellites - The Georgia Satellites

Rating: B

The Georgia Satellites were the last hurrah for Southern Rock.  No one could have predicted this band of ragtag rockers would have a prayer of making a splash in the music scene in 1986.  Hair Bands covered in glitz and glamour, looking more like women than men, were on the charts and showing off their spandex bulges with pride.  The flavor of the day was not t-shirt, blue jean wearing rockers who looked more like they just finished their shift at the local foundry than they did rock stars.  The thing is no one told that to Dan Baird, Rick Richards, Rick Price and Mauro Magellant.  Nope... instead they just went about their business, night after night, in Atlanta minding their own business, cranking it up to 11, and playing the only three or four chords they knew like their lives depended on it.

They were good enough and unique enough to land a major label deal.  Part Stones, part Hatchet and all Southern, the band accidently reached #5 on the album charts on the back of a #2 smash hit single called “Keep Your  Hands to Yourself.”  Dan Baird became an MTV darling, ‘huggey and kissey’ became favorite words used by chicks bouncing about nightclub dance floors and the rest, as they say, is rock ‘n’ roll history.

The self-titled debut was produced by Jeff Glixman of Kansas fame.  He loved the album so much that he produced it again when Rock Candy wanted to release the album one more time.  Jeff gave it a once over, threw in some bonus live tracks and a couple of remixes of the party tune “Battleship Chains” and a remake of the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed classic “I’m Waiting for the Man.”

Rock Candy Records has brought this album back to life, actually making it even better than before.  The Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition was fully remastered, sound shaped from 24 BIT digital technology, and produced by Jeff Glixman.  It includes a 16-page full color booklet, a 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork and rare photos.
